My name is Dr. Larry Moore and I am running for the Douglas County Board of Education, District three. I have been a Georgia Educator for thirty years, serving as teacher, assistant principal, and principal. I am also a U.S. Army veteran. I believe that as a community we must demand more from our leaders, and give more to students. I believe that we have a good school system, however many of our students are not doing well. We can no longer accept the mediocrity of status quo. We must demand better. Georgia ranks 37th in the nation in education. It is time that we get serious about public education. Leadership has to begin with the school board.

The job of the school board is to work with the Superintendent to develop policies that will ensure that all student learn at their highest levels, and to develop and maintain a budget that supports excellent teaching and learning. I believe that we must focus on lowering class size, creating more opportunities for our students, and providing teachers with the resources to manage their classrooms. We also must focus on the effective use of technology, including cell phones, and the presence of social media in the lives of our students. We also must develop EFFECTIVE policies that deal with student safety, bullying, and cyberbullying. Too many students do not feel safe in their schools!

We must be honest about the state of public education in Georgia, and in Douglas County. See the page about DCSS data for a brief picture of how our system is doing. Please visit the Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA,) and the Georgia Department of Education,GaDOE, (go to Data and Reporting, then College and Career Ready Performance Index,) websites for detailed information on how your school is doing.

I have worked as an assistant principal at Chestnut Log Middle school, New Manchester High School, and Douglas County High School. I also know many educators in this county. I am convinced that we have some of the finest educators in the state. They work extremely hard trying to educate our students. However, due to some poor or ineffective policies, in addition to heavy demands of mandated testing, their efforts have been hindered.
If we want great schools we must have a great school board that supports educators and students.
The school board must ensure excellent teaching and learning for all students.
The school board must be fiscally responsible.
The school board must be 100% accountable.
The school board must be 100% transparent.

I want more for our students because if we fail students we fail our community.

Unemployment and underemployment are real!
The school to prison pipeline is real!
Mass incarceration is real!
Homelessness is real!
Gangs are real!

Lets give our students educational opportunities to be competitive worldwide.
